Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck - Success Checklist
Living paycheck to paycheck is a rough road, providing seemingly-endless frustration, heartache, and uncertainty. Millions of people wish they could escape from this reality, but many do not know how. There is, however, a method for success, and a way to escape the spiral of debt accumulation and paycheck to paycheck.
Following this simple “Success Checklist” will give you the steps you need to escape debt.
- Pay off your debt. Merely paying a credit card company's minimum payments is not sufficient to escape debt, and in fact allows you to sink lower and lower under the weight of interest. Set aside a large part of each paycheck to pay as much of your payment as you can.
- Buy less. This concept is easy to understand but hard to master. The ease of use of online shopping and one-click purchases has created a culture of instant decision-making, and you must overcome this habit. Consider each purchase carefully before you make it. Do you need this item? If you do, can you get another for less at a different store?
- Save a portion of each paycheck. Let compound interest work for you rather than against you. No matter what arises, make certain that you save even a small portion of each paycheck. Every cent that you have in the bank begins to earn interest, but more importantly, it gives you a cushion to use in case of emergencies.
- Make a plan. Don't attempt to merely stumble through this strategy to save yourself from debt; design a coherent plan, taking into account your expenses, absolutely necessary purchases, rent payments, and debt payments. After you make your plan, stick to it. Any deviation from the plan renders the plan itself irrelevant and useless, so hold tight to your design as much as possible.
- Cultivate perseverance and patience. Climbing out of the debt hole is a long, hard task, and only with a strong spirit and patience to endure the rough times can you make it. Understand that your habits must change, and that the old ways of buying unnecessary items or living beyond your means have to be overcome by a will of savings and careful analysis. Perseverance will help you succeed in debt management.
Although these steps work as a theory, they can only change your life if you let them. To truly escape the spiral of debt, you have to put in the effort and make the sacrifices. Changing your lifestyle to save more money, pay off debt, and work harder is not fun or particularly gratifying, but it is the only way to escape from this cycle. Once you have defeated the debt monster, you will find more of your paychecks available for vacations and fun purchases, and your life will begin moving in the direction you have always wanted.
