Insurance Concerns After Retirement

After you retire you will need to know how you will handle your health insurance.  Many people do not even realize they need to think about insurance.  Some people will get lucky and be able to continue with their former employers insurance, but others are not so lucky.  Government insurance keeps being changed, so it is very unreliable.  Private insurance is an option, too.  You need to include insurance in your retirement plans no matter what your options are.

When it comes to retirement planning, you need to consider two types of insurance - life and health.  These are the two areas of insurance that will most likely change when you retire.  The first thing you need to do is talk with your employer.  Find out if they offer continuing coverage after you retire.  If they do get the details.  See if the charges will be different or stay the same.  If your employer does not offer continuing coverage then you will need to find an alternative.  For life insurance, specifically, you need to determine how your needs will change once you retire.  Right now, you may the kids to think about, you may be making house payments, you probably have a lot more expenses then you will at retirement.  When you retire you may want to decrease your life insurance amount.  You should speak with you agent to see how to go about making those changes.

Your options if you need to find an alternative to current policies is to look at what the government offers and look into private plans.  The government offer Medicare for those over 65.  There are income limitations, though, and coverage may not be exactly like what you have now.  Look into the specifics and see if you will be able to be covered by Medicare and if it will be enough to meet your needs.  There are endless options in private insurance, but be aware that you are likely to pay more than you do before retirement.  Shop around, get quotes and find what best suits you.

It is really important not to forget your insurance needs when planning for retirement.  You will need insurance and if you do not plan you may find yourself without coverage at a time when you may need it the most.
